Whether you are driving a long distance or just across town to celebrate Christmas with friends and family, the province is reminding you to plan ahead and do it safely. If you are driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you are not only putting yourself at risk but the lives of others in the vehicle and people on the road you do not even know. Cannabis, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medication can result in as much impairment as alcohol, especially when taken in combination. About 6,000 people were convicted of impaired driving in Alberta in each of the past five years. In Alberta a driver with a blood alcohol concentration of between 0.05 and 0.079 may face provincial consequences through the Immediate Roadside Suspension Program. Cannabis limits are measured by detecting minute traces of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in the blood stream, referred to as nanograms. 7
