The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society received its annual donation of pajamas from CUPE local 829 – 511 total pairs to be exact.
It is the sixth year that CUPE has helped the shelter with donations and Cynthia Henders says the support from the community is always outstanding.
“We collected on Black Friday at the mall for two days then the rest were donations through the school,” said Henders.
She says it is important for the community to help the shelter.
“They’re in great need,” she said. “They have hundreds of children who come through here every year and they need pajamas a lot of the time.
“We’re donating sets for women, children, men, girls, young boys – everyone.”
People fleeing bad situations who end up at the shelter often don’t have time to pack a bag of their things. The shelter gives them pajamas to keep them comfortable and warm during their stay in a new environment.
“We had a bunch of cash donated as well so we were able to give that, too,” she said. “The support from the community has been outstanding.”
