A 26-year-old man accused of bestiality, sexual assault and child pornography charges has obtained counsel.

Defence lawyer Sarah Lewans appeared in provincial court Thursday on behalf of Cody Herrell, where she sought an adjournment until the new year.

Lewans told court she’s waiting on further disclosure from the Crown, which has a special prosecutor appointed to the file – anticipated to take a month.

Herrell is back in court on Jan. 9.

The accused was arrested Sept. 26, after ALERT exercised a search warrant on his residence, finding evidence of sexual assault “against at least one unidentified child, who is believed to be known to him,” and bestiality, “involving several dogs,” according to a Medicine Hat Police Service news release at the time.

Herrell was brought to local police’s attention in February, when the National Child Exploitation Centre in Ottawa flagged his IP address for allegedly uploading child porn.

He faces charges of bestiality and sexual assault, as well as accessing, possessing and distributing child porn.
