Medicine Hatter John Cherwonogrodzky travelled to Ukraine recently and was able to give a talk on biothreats at Lviv National Medical University.
His talk was centred around the use of biothreats to develop new vaccines and therapies. He says the talk was received well by staff and medical students.
“I had made a contact at a previous event I spoke at and we decided that if I was going through Ukraine I could do a talk,” he said. “I think it went really well and a good sign was that the question and answer period went longer than the actual lecture.
“Speaking to the students was enjoyable for me.”
Cherwonogrodzky spent years working at CFB Suffield, where he worked every day with biothreats.
“A biothreat is exactly what it sounds like – something like an epidemic or a new invasive disease,” he said. “Anything that is a biological that is a threat – the talk I gave in Ukraine focused on instead of ignoring these things, why don’t we look at how the human body reacts to these things?”
Cherwonogrodzky was in Ukraine for three weeks in late September and early October and he says got to see family as well.
“My relatives aren’t getting any younger – so it’s important to see them when I can,” he said. “It’s always great to see family and when we go we can do touristy things as well.
“It was a pretty good trip where I was able to balance a lot of different things.”
Cherwonogrodzky says he will continue to do talks like this.
