Crown electricity provider SaskPower will go ahead with plans to build a major natural-gas powered plant near Moose Jaw, the minister in charge announced this week, as work is winding up on a new plant near Swift Current. Dustin Duncan said on Thursday that a review of how the Moose Jaw facility, first announced in 2017, would perform under new federal emission standards is complete. “Building the gas plant at Moose Jaw remains the most economic choice for SaskPower,” Duncan said. “Natural gas generation is a cost-efficient, low-carbon and reliable source of baseload power, which will be crucial as we continue to increase renewables.” The 350-megawatt facility would be complete in 2024, which would subject it to federal guidelines added last June for plants built after 2021. In October, SaskPower opened a submission period for firms in an effort to add 300-megawatts of renewable energy capacity, and which will be awarded in late 2020. A release also states that the 350-megawatt gas-powered Chinook Power Station, near Swift Current, will be commissioned by the end of 2019 after several years of construction. 7
