Prescribed fires to take place at Suffield National Wildlife Area this weekend

By Medicine Hat News on November 2, 2019.

CFB Suffield has partnered with Environment and Climate Change Canada to conduct prescribed fires this weekend.

The fires will affect a few small areas of grassland at the CFB Suffied National Wildlife Area, which is a section of the base where no ground military training occurs to protect the native grasslands and wildlife habitats.

According to a press release, the fire is required to benefit the fire-dependent ecosystems and species at risk within the area. That includes the Ord’s Kangaroo Rat.

“Fire suppression assets will be on scene and a number of mitigation measures will be in place throughout the duration of the operation. The decision to conduct or postpone any prescribed fire will be based on weather-related conditions,” a release states.

Those who live near the base may observe smoke from a distance and see emergency vehicles in the area. To report concerns, contact CFB Suffield Range Control (403-544-4310) or the nearest fire service.
