CFB Suffield has partnered with Environment and Climate Change Canada to conduct prescribed fires this weekend. The fires will affect a few small areas of grassland at the CFB Suffied National Wildlife Area, which is a section of the base where no ground military training occurs to protect the native grasslands and wildlife habitats. According to a press release, the fire is required to benefit the fire-dependent ecosystems and species at risk within the area. That includes the Ord’s Kangaroo Rat. “Fire suppression assets will be on scene and a number of mitigation measures will be in place throughout the duration of the operation. The decision to conduct or postpone any prescribed fire will be based on weather-related conditions,” a release states. Those who live near the base may observe smoke from a distance and see emergency vehicles in the area. To report concerns, contact CFB Suffield Range Control (403-544-4310) or the nearest fire service. 6
