Agrium fined for leak that injured worker

By Medicine Hat News on October 11, 2019.

A fertilizer producer has been fined after an anhydrous ammonia leak at its plant near Carseland, Alta., two years ago.

Agrium will pay nearly $29,000 in fines, including a victim surcharge for the incident that “seriously injured a worker” but was not reported for four weeks.

According to an agreed statement of facts, serious chemical burns resulted on a worker’s hands after a relief valve was “inadvertently jarred open” at the facility in January 2017

Fines announced on Thursday by the Ministry of Parks and Environment involves failing to report the chemical release in a timely manner.

The accident is not included in posted list of Occupational Health and Safety investigations or prosecutions.
