Cap with uncertain future keeps power prices in check again, while natural gas cost falls

By Medicine Hat News on September 4, 2019.

Power prices will remain capped in September for utility customers in the City of Medicine Hat, while the cost of natural gas drops, according to rates published Tuesday by the city utility department.

Local customers will pay 6.8 cents per kilowatt hour in September, the same price on bills as August and July, but with the difference between it and a market-derived rate paid directly to generating companies by the province.

That program is under review, according to the Ministry of Energy, with a decision on the fate of the program paid for by funds from the now-cancelled carbon levy due this fall.

The average market-based rate, posted by generators, was 7.88 cents per kilowatt hour.

The high price for power from regulated rate options in Alberta is 8.05-cents from Epcor (Edmonton) and the lowest in 7.6-cents from Enmax. Medicine Hat sets its commodity price at the average of those around the province.

Similarly, the high price for gas is $1.44 per gigajoule, offered by AltaGas, and the low is $1.166 by Direct Energy.

Medicine Hatters will be charged $1.303 per gigajoule of gas used this month, compared to $1.503 in August and just 29.5-cents in July.
