A single-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near the hospital resulted in considerable damage and delays for early morning traffic in the area.

At about 7:50 a.m. Friday emergency crews rushed to the scene of a vehicle collision at the intersection of the TCH and Sixth Street SW.

A 53-year-old male was driving a 2016 BMW and heading west on the highway when he lost control at the intersection and collided with a traffic light standard.

The driver and lone occupant of the BMW was not injured in the collision.

Police say emergency services and road repair workers were on scene until 9:30 a.m. redirecting traffic until the collision scene was cleared of all debris, and the traffic lights were repaired.

Police have estimated the damage as a result of the collision to be $80,000.

The driver of the vehicle has been charged with failing to stop before entering an intersection on a yellow light, contrary to Section 53(1) Use of the Highway and Rules of the Road Regulations, states a press release. This offence carries a penalty of $155.
