Man expected to plead guilty to two of 17 charges faced over single incident

A man accused of 17 offences stemming form a single incident, including conspiracy and belonging to a criminal organization, is expected to plead guilty to trafficking drugs and possessing property obtained through crime.

Ian Gabriel, 45, didn’t personally appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court Thursday because he is in the Maritimes, as permitted under his bail conditions, defence counsel James Rouleau told court.

A special federal Crown based out of Calgary has been appointed to the case.

Although no pleas have been entered yet, Rouleau elected for the matter to be heard in provincial court in the event Gabriel pleads not guilty to the rest of his charges.

The matter was adjourned to Nov. 20, when he is expected to be sentenced for the trafficking and possession of stolen property charges.

Gabriel faces seven counts of trafficking and seven counts of possessing property obtained through crime, as well as one charge each of belonging to a criminal organization, possession for the purposes of trafficking and conspiracy.
