Medicine Hat's Lynn Freundl is $1 million richer after checking some old lottery tickets in early July.

Thinking ahead and buying a month’s worth of lottery tickets has paid off in a big way for one Hatter.

Not wanting to miss the draws while she was wintering in Yuma, Ariz., Lynn Freundl purchased tickets for the draws she’d be away for before leaving. She finally checked the LOTTO 6/49 tickets in early July and learned she won $1 million.

“I scanned the ticket once and saw a bunch of numbers pop up on the screen,” she said in a Western Canadian Lottery Corporation release. “I thought there was something wrong with the machine at first, so I scanned the ticket a few more times.”

“I took the ticket to the store clerk and asked her to check it for me,” she continued. “When I saw the amount on the screen I thought, ‘OMG – this cannot be true!’”

She was quick to hand in her retirement notice, and has one other big plan for the future thanks to the windfall.

“My husband and I are also going to buy an SUV and trailer and travel across Canada.”

Freundl purchased her tickets for the March 13-April draws at the Pharmasave on Eighth Street NW. The March 27 draw was the lucky one.
