The local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters is hosting its third annual Ribs for Kids fundraiser in a couple of weeks.

The event is taking place Aug. 9-11 at the Stampede grounds, and will include five large rib trucks with professional barbecuers, various other food trucks, a lemonade stand and – courtesy of the Elks club – hot, buttery corn on the cob.

There will be staged featuring live entertainment and medieval-style bouncy castle, as well.

“We’re looking for new and innovative ways to raise funds to support positive outcomes for young people facing adversity in our community,” said executive director Holly Stadnicki.

BBBS Medicine Hat raised about $40,000 at last year’s Ribs for Kids, but they’re hoping to raise upwards of $60,000 this year, she said.

The group receives “very little” funding from the government, so it depends largely on the public goodwill.

Raising awareness of BBBS’s work in the community is also a significant component of an event of this sort.

“The awareness piece is really, really imperative for us,” Stadnicki says. “We’d like the community to know that we are strong in this community. We’re always looking for volunteer mentors to step forward and support some of these children who need a positive role model in their life.”
