Community Spirit Awards given to 11 recipients

Eleven individuals and organizations in Medicine Hat are the recipients of the 2019 Community Spirit Awards.

The list was revealed at city council’s Monday meeting and honours those who have worked to make Medicine hat a better place in several areas,

This spring council approved a policy to allow groups or businesses to be earn consideration for the annual awards and also allow multiple honourees in each six categories.

This year, South Country Co-op will receive the award of excellence (the “Heart of Medicine Hat Award”), while other categories see two or three winners named.

Artist Evelyn Kleis and band-leader Bill Wahl receive the arts and culture award.

In sports and recreation entries, a committee selected the Medicine Hat Alberta Games Society and soccer coach Allen Parker.

The environment award will be presented to the Southeast Alberta Watershed Alliance and Uwe-Karsten Krickhahn, a long time advocate who donated 6,300 saplings to school children to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Top volunteerism entries were the Medicine Hat College Rattlers community engagement program and senior citizens advisory committee members Doug Heine, and Gordon and Sherry Nott.

Malcolm Sissons, an advocate for heritage preservation earned the civic pride award.

The recipients were determined by a selection committee, made up of representatives from council’s advisory boards and committees and approved by city council.

They will be awarded at an event at the Esplanade’s main theatre on Thursday, Oct. 3. The public is welcome to attend.
