MacKenzie Porter plans to say her vows in Medicine Hat next summer.

“My fiance is from South Carolina and he  – like most guys – doesn’t care as much as I care where it is,” Porter said Friday. “I have such a big family and he’s got a bit of a smaller family so I think we’ll do it in Medicine Hat.”

But that’s as far down the proverbial aisle as Porter has gone.

“I’m finding that I’m probably going to be a pretty lazy bride because I haven’t done any planning yet,” she said with a laugh, adding she’s relying on her mom and sister to help. “I’ve done nothing and I probably should start.”

Porter and Jake Etheridge announced their engagement Thursday, a few weeks after she said yes.

The proposal was “perfect,” she said. After an eight-course dinner at a new Indian restaurant in their Nashville neighbourhood the couple walked home. Etheridge opened the door, Porter walked in, saw candles, roses and champagne, and lost it.

“I actually started crying the second I saw the candles and everything because I knew what was happening. I just cried, like ugly cried,” she said. “I forgot to say yes I just starting crying and hugging him. It was really special.”

The pair, together five years, had talked about what they wanted the moment to be like, Porter said.

“I was very adamant I wanted it to be just us, something personal. I didn’t want anything flashy or extravagant so it was a perfect way to do it.”

The couple met as songwriters in 2012, and the day is commemorated by a post on Etheridge’s Instagram. Like Porter, he’s a songwriter, singer and actor. He was a series regular on the final season of “Nashville” among other film and TV roles.

“He’s just the sweetest, most genuine, down-to-earth human,” Porter said. “His family is the sweetest and since day one they’ve said I was going to be their future daughter-in-law. I’m so lucky to come into a cool family like that.”

Porter has released a stream of singles since late last year, including “About You.” The song became her first No. 1 last month and Etheridge starred in the music video. She aims to have an EP out in the fall and will tour with Dallas Smith and Dean Brody on their Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone tour. Medicine Hat isn’t on the schedule, with Calgary (Oct. 17-18) and Lethbridge (Oct. 21) being the closest stops.
