The Friends of the Library’s summer book sale is underway at the public library.

The event kicked off Friday morning with a rush of Hatters coming through the doors – the event is also running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

“We do sales twice every year,” said one of the sale’s co-ordinators Karen LaHay. “We do a book sale every year during Spectrum and then we do a second in the winter during Midnight Madness.”

“So far, through the first couple of hours here, it’s been fantastic.”

The sale features a number of donated items as well as books off the public library’s shelves.

“It’s always a great selection of books – both for kids and adults,” said LaHay. “We’re overwhelmed with DVDs this year, and people are getting a great deal on those.

“There’s a lot of really great stuff here and we know a lot of people get here as early as possible to get the best deals.”

Last winter’s sale raised around $7,000 – money put directly back into the public library’s coffers.

“The Friends of the Library puts all the book sale money into an account and once it reaches a sizable amount the library will submit a wish list to us,” said LaHay. “Our committee decides what we will end up supporting with the money.

“Right now we’re going to designate a sum of funds to the children’s library – the library will be doing work there and we will help them with that.”

LaHay says books, magazines, movies and games that are not sold during this year’s sale will end up donated to different organizations around the city like The Post, the hospital and the airport.

“We make sure nothing goes to waste.”
