Medicine Hat’s Historic Clay District is getting a new man in charge. Medalta announced Friday that Mike Onieu, who currently works at CFB Suffield, will be taking over for Aaron Nelson in July. Medalta announced in March that Nelson would be leaving the organization to pursue a new opportunity in the community. Friends of Medalta Society chair Linda Rossler says Onieu is the right man for the job. “We’re really excited to have Mike on board,” said Rossler. “Mike has leadership skills. He is able to manage diverse personalities. He has fundraising experience, he has great interpersonal skills and he’s trustworthy. “Mike loves Medalta – he has a passion for old buildings and everything Medalta.” Rossler says Medalta performed a Canada-wide search for the new executive director – one that included five interviews before Onieu was picked at the new executive director. “There was a strong representation of people from across Canada in our search,” said Rossler. “We did interviews, checked references and we came to the conclusion that Mike was our guy.” Medalta has had two executive directors leave in the past few years and Rossler says she is hoping Onieu is a long-term fixture at Medalta. “He’s the person who can take Medalta to the next stage,” she said. “We’re at a stage of long range planning and we have a plan for the next 30 years of Medalta – he can take us there.” 10
