The city’s landfill will begin operating on extended summer hours as of Monday, while pickup for yard waste carts from residences is set to commence the week of April 15. Loads dropped off at the landfill will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Green bin pickup typically begins in the third full week of April each year, dependent on the weather. Elm tree ban A ban on pruning elm trees begins Sunday and will continue until colder temperatures arrive next fall in an effort to control the spread of Dutch elm disease in the city’s tree canopy. Trimming and removing limbs during active growth summer period attract beetles that spread the fungus. As such authorities warn against summer trimming, as well as storing or travelling with elm firewood. Elm trees may still be removed in total, but must be taken down below ground level and disposed of by burying in the city’s landfill – not in compost or city yard waste collection bins. 8
