Meth, handgun seized in southeastern Alberta

A Glock .40-calibre and more than 500 grams of methamphetmine were seized following an investigation by ALERT Medicine Hat's organized crime unit that wrapped up in February.

More than half a kilogram of methamphetamine is off the streets following a drug trafficking investigation that wrapped up on Feb. 22.

ALERT Medicine Hat’s organized crime team, with the assistance of the Medicine Hat Police Service and Brooks RCMP made three arrests during traffic stops in Medicine Hat and Brooks.

A loaded handgun, brass knuckles and $830 in cash was also seized. The handgun was a Glock .40-calibre with the serial number filed off.

“This investigation is a significant step in disrupting and dismantling organized crime in our community,” said S/Sgt. Cory Both of ALERT Medicine Hat. “Preventing these drugs and weapons from hitting the streets of Medicine Hat goes a long way toward keeping our residents safe.”

The value of the drugs seized is estimated at $32,000.

Aron Horvath, 37, is charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime and eight firearms-related offences.

James Benard, 26, is charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, possession of a prohibited weapon, and three counts of breach of probation.

Devon Koehle, 19, was also arrested. She is charged with possession of a controlled substance and breach of recognizance.
