Police Point Park is one of the places to be for Family Day, with a number of events planned throughout Monday afternoon.

The group will be offering several activities for families, a big one being free skiing and snowshoeing.

“We look forward to putting this on every year ,” said park interpreter Marty Drut. “Since there’s going to be a lot of snow we’re allowing people to take out the snowshoes and cross country skis for free – usually there’s a bit of a cost, but we’re doing it for free Monday.

“Police Point is pretty flat, so it’s a great place to learn to do these things.”

The group will be selling birdhouse and bird feeder kits for $5, giving families something fun to do indoors.

“Those are popular every year,” said Drut. “They’re really fun to build as a family.”

The park will be selling hot dogs and offering free hot cider and cookies.

“We have the display up right now from Parks Alberta,” said Drut. “People are encouraged to take a look around inside and outside

“We have our Winter Story Walk going as well, so people can read the story as they walk around the park.”

The event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, which helps the park offer the festivities each year.

“They help us a lot,”said Drut. “They help us in more ways than one and we’re very thankful for them.”

Drut says the park always holds the event so families can enjoy the great outdoors.

“We know it won’t be a warm day but there’s still a lot to do around here,” he said. “We want families to come out and have fun and to enjoy the park.

“When people are done, or when they get too cold, they can head over to the Leisure Centre to have more fun over there.”

The event is running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will go no matter the weather.

“Forecasts actually look pretty good right now,” said Drut. “Regardless of what happens, we’ll be here.”

Wow, talk about wacky coincidences.
Apparently another group (Grassland Naturalists) is holding a Family Day event at Police Point on Monday, Feb 18.
Crazier still, it too is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.
There’s also presentation by Parks Canada entitled, “What’s the Connection: Discover Nature’s Renewal”.
You can check it out here:

By the way Mr Cranker, it’s Alberta Parks, not Parks Alberta. But why let something like accuracy get in your way.
