The Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event for Hope Street Compassionate Ministry Centre is set for Feb. 23, and teams of walkers are still needed.

“This is a family-friendly fundraiser that raises money in 135 locations across Canada,” Hope Street CMC executive director Murray Kumm said. “The money goes toward feeding the hungry, homeless and hurting in those communities.”

Kumm says the local walk aims to bring in $25,000 for Hope Street, making this its largest fundraiser of the year.

“In those 135 communities they’re hoping to raise a total of $5 million,” he said. “Locally, we’re looking at $25,000, which is a huge chunk of our fundraising for the year.

“The money raised around the country does a lot of good for a lot of people.”

Hope Street runs a Sunday afternoon meal program out of St. Barnabus Church downtown and also serves a warm meal on the first Saturday of each month.

“All of the money raised here will stay here,” he said. “Our Family Safe Food Program is what we’ve got going on right now,” said Kumm. “We have future plans but right now our meal program is our main focus.

“We serve people every week and there is a need for this in our community.”

The event takes place at St. Barnabus with registration starting at 4 p.m., opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. and then the walk begins at 5:15 p.m.
