Medicine Hat Public School Division trustee Carolyn Freeman has been appointed to a provincial body overseeing inclusion in Alberta schools.
Freeman is the province’s only trustee appointed to the Advisory Committee for Building an Inclusive Education System, where she will represent the Alberta School Boards Association.
“The purpose of this advisory committee is really to enhance and foster that communication between stakeholders and Alberta Education, and enable the sharing of information regarding inclusive education,” Freeman said.
“It’s a really terrific opportunity to represent the trustees, and also have some sort of voice in this whole process of making sure that all includes all and that each student has a right to an education that best meets their needs.”
The committee provides support for Alberta Education to ensure the education system “meets the needs of our diverse population of students throughout the province,” Freeman added.
These efforts include the inclusive education funding model, new support templates that provide individualized support plans for students and providing a variety of resources for educators, as well as the ongoing curriculum update.
There’s also a focus on how the province can build more inclusive infrastructure.
She said she applied to the committee and found out in early December she was selected as an emissary to the ASBA.
“I’m really looking forward to this opportunity and am exciting about it, looking forward to the first meeting to see what it really entails and where we’re headed,” said Freeman.
The first meeting is scheduled for April 5 in Edmonton.
