A former journalist from Winnipeg accused of a bank-robbing spree across Saskatchewan and Alberta is still waiting for a psychiatric assessment, the Court of Queen’s Bench heard Friday.

Stephen Vogelsang appeared in person, where defence lawyer Greg White said he’s waiting for space at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatric Centre in Calgary.

Vogelsang was arrested in fall 2017 after a string of six holdups — two in Medicine Hat, two in Regina and one in Saskatoon — between July and October that year.

He faces a single count of robbery in Medicine Hat and will be tried by judge and jury.

In addition to being a former news anchor at CTV Winnipeg, Vogelsang was a journalism instructor at Red River College, where he was employed from 2002-2011.

The accused has a preliminary inquiry for his Saskatchewan matters scheduled for April, complicating the scheduling of his Medicine Hat matters.

At a previous court appearance, Vogelsang pled guilty to four unrelated breaches of a protection order after he attempted to contact his ex-girlfriend in Winnipeg in August 2017.

He was ordered to pay $800 in fines for that offence.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 15.
