One person is dead following a workplace accident at the Cavendish construction site on Wednesday morning.

Occupational Health and Safety officers were on site at 43rd Street N. in Lethbridge and are investigating, according to officials.

“We don’t have a lot of details yet, but what we do know is that an incident took place at the Cavendish Farms potato processing plant construction site at about 8 a.m. this morning (Wednesday),” Trent Bancarz, a spokesperson with Alberta Labour, told CTV Lethbridge. “One worker was taken to hospital and pronounced dead at hospital. We haven’t been able to confirm the worker’s age or gender yet.”

He also said they are unsure who the worker was employed by.

“Exactly what happened — that’s going to be part of what the investigation is going to determine,” Bancarz said.

The Cavendish plant is scheduled to open this fall.
