Nick Kuhl Lethbridge Heraldnkuhl@lethbridgeherald.com LETHBRIDGE The skies will be quieter this summer. Confirmed early Wednesday morning via email: there will not be a Lethbridge Air Show in 2019. Stacy Green, the air show’s director of communications, said that in late December the Lethbridge International Air Show Association notified City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge County councils that the biennial Lethbridge Air Show will be postponed until the Heritage Day long weekend in August 2020. This decision was made for a number of reasons, Green said in the release, including the recent passing of air show friend, longtime volunteer and board member Brent Botfield. “Moving forward — and in keeping with a tradition of a (more than) 40-year history of organized air shows in southern Alberta — we find ourselves making changes that will continue to assure growth in the quality of our show, and the positive impact it brings to southern Alberta communities and businesses,” Green said in the release. Green adds that postponing and staggering to even-numbered years will provide a greater opportunity to acquire more support from military branches in both Canada and the U.S. “This change better situates the Lethbridge Air Show as a potential tour stop for a much wider variety of performers and attractions,” he said. “Heritage Day weekend further de-conflicts the air show with the growing number of summer events in southern Alberta while positioning Lethbridge as a potential holiday weekend destination. We feel it fitting to take this extra time to plan for a show that will have been well worth the wait.” 11
