Skinny’s Smokehouse suffered a minor act of vandalism to its backup smoker on Christmas Day.

The restaurant posted a surveillance screenshot on its Facebook on Wednesday in an effort to warn the public about the vandal, who could be targeting other properties in town.

Jeff Brewster, a co-owner of Skinny’s, says the incident didn’t appear to be an attempted theft of the smoker.

“They cut the extension cord off of it, stole another extension cord and a little plastic tote box,” he said, adding that the damage didn’t exceed $30.

“I think he was after copper … just to turn into the metal recycler to get a little money.”

Brewster said that although the damage was “really minimal,” it still took “time out of our day to go and repair everything.”

Another business in town had a similar incident committed by someone who appears to fit the profile of the Skinny’s vandal, sporting a red jacket with a Shell logo on the back, he added.

“They got the same perpetrator on their camera,” said Brewster.

Medicine Hat Police Service Staff-Sgt. Ryan Thorburn says police are looking into it.

“We might end up arresting somebody, we might not,” he said. “We’ve got some ideas of who it might be, but nothing for sure at this time.”
