A Redcliff man accused of sexual offences with a person under 16 years of age entered into a one-year peace bond Monday.

As conditions of his peace bond, Derrick Steeves, 55, must attend counselling on functioning family relationships, refrain from contacting the complainant, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, and is prohibited from interacting with anyone under 16 without the presence of a sober adult.

A peace bond is not an admission of guilt. If he abides by its terms, Steeves will have no criminal record from these charges.

The accused was charged June 21 with sexual assault, which allegedly occurred on Sept. 9, 2017, according to court documents.

This charge was originally set on Sept. 18 for a 500-minute trial Monday at Medicine Hat Provincial Court.

On Nov. 7, Steeves was charged with another count of sexual assault, as well as sexual contact with a minor and invitation to sexual touching, all which allegedly occurred between Nov. 1, 2015, and Sept. 9, 2017, in Redcliff.

The second set of charges were withdrawn in exchange for Steeves entering into the peace bond on the first.

For the purposes of the peace bond, the initial count was amended to read, “There is a reasonable fear that Derrick Steeves will commit an offence … in respect of an unknown person under the age of 16 years in that (the accused) has been subject of a sexual offence allegation.”
