The Medicine Hat Public Library’s annual winter book sale runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This is a sale we have every year in the winter,” said co-ordinator Karen LaHay. “We have a sale every summer and in the winter — this one we do as part of Midnight Madness.”

There are thousands of books for sale at the public library, as well as DVDs, video games and magazines.

“All of the money we raise goes back into the library,” said LaHay. “We help pay for things and programs in the library that are necessities that may not be covered by the city or other funding.

“The library has approached us for things like reupholstering chairs up stairs and help with the theatre renovations.”

The book selection is made up of a large number of donated books and material the library no longer wants on its shelves.

“Some of the books that just aren’t being checked out anymore make it to the sale,” said LaHay. “We also get a large amount of donations from the general public that go specifically to our book sales.”

LaHay says the group is hoping to raise roughly $6,000 when all is said and done.

“The first hour or two is always so busy — people are rushing to see what books we have for sure,” she said. “There’s a really great selection of books — there’s something for everyone.

“Hardcovers are $2 each. Paperbacks are $1. DVDs and CDs are $1 each. Children’s books are four for $1 and bundles of magazines are $1.”
