Santa Claus will ho-ho-ho-hopefully make an appearance this Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 during downtown's annual Midnight Madness. This is Santa and a couple of admirers from a few years ago. Similar sights should be plentiful Friday night.

Hatters looking to get a little Christmas shopping done will have an opportunity Friday evening at most stores downtown.

The annual Midnight Madness festivities will feature plenty to do with the majority of businesses taking part.

“It’s a great night to do some late-night shopping — things start at 6 p.m.,” said Midnight Madness co-ordinator April Tunke. “The night his going to be kicked off by the tree-lighting in BATUS Park, and then people are welcome to walk around downtown and get some shopping done.”

Tunke says there will be carolers making their way around downtown Friday and a group of Rangers will be handing out candy canes throughout the evening. There will be a free movie playing at the Monarch, free hayrides on Second Street and Santa will be sitting at the Gaslight Plaza taking pictures with families.

While the event is optional for businesses, Tunke says the City Centre Development Agency expects almost all to be open at night.

“We usually have nearly everyone taking part, even if it’s not for the whole 6 p.m. to midnight event,” she said. “It’s just a great way for the businesses to interact with some customers and it allows people to get downtown and to do some shopping.

“Even if people don’t want to do shopping, there will be a lot for them to do as a family.”

Tunke added that certain businesses run special deals throughout the evening.
