Families looking to spend time together can do so at Police Point Park this weekend during the annual Lions Club Christmas Hayride event.

The rides take place from 1-4 p.m. at the park and have been running for 35 years, says hayride co-ordinator Catherine Heberle.

“This is an event that we hold that is open to the public and is free,” she said. “We have two teams of horses and wagons coming to take kids and adults for a ride.

“We’re going to have some free food and drinks and free hot chocolate to keep everyone warm.”

The Lions of Medicine Hat will also be selling hotdogs on a pay-what-you-can basis.

“The hotdogs are sold by donation,” said Heberle. “Some people pay $1 for some tickets, others pay $20.

“We just want people to be comfortable paying for these because the money is gong to a good cause.”

The money collected will go to the Medicine Hat & District Food Bank

“We’re also asking people coming to bring some nonperishable food so we can donate that to the food bank as well,” she said.

Heberle says the event remains popular because it’s a fun afternoon for the family.

“It’s Christmas,” she said. “I remember going on these hayrides years ago and I think it’s a really fun memory you can create for kids.

“Some of the Lions used to bring their kids and now their bringing their grand kids — it’s just a really nice tradition.”

Santa will be on hand Sunday and Police Point will have crafts set up for kids to enjoy.

More information can be had by calling the park at 403-529-6225.
