Legal weed causing zero local problems so far

Lineups stretched out the door from 10 a.m. until at late in the day on Oct. 17 at cannabis retailers in Medicine Hat. Local shop owners, as well as local authorities, say legalization has thus far caused no problems in the community.--NEWS PHOTO COLLIN GALLANT

One month after recreational marijuana use was legalized, demand in Medicine Hat stores is still high while public complaints to police are low, shop keepers and police officials report.

Medicine Hat was home to three retail outlets on Oct. 17, when federal prohibitions were rescinded, and after a year of hype, pot smokers could legally purchase and possess cannabis.

In the lead-up however, city council shelved a local public behaviour bylaw stating stiffer restrictions were required than what was proposed, or were enacted as minimum standards by the province.

Most local officials didn’t envision chaos but predicted at least some public hoopla would accompany the legalization.

However, local law enforcement say in terms of cannabis-related calls, it has been a very slow month.

“In regards to that, we’ve had absolutely nothing,” said Medicine Hat bylaw officer Heather Trail. “We don’t have a (local) bylaw here yet, but even on the provincial (regulations) part of it, we’ve had zero calls.”

“All the hype and excitement for it was more, in the end, what it’s turned out to have been,” she said. “It’s been pretty peaceful.”

Under Alberta rules that originally targeted tobacco, cannabis cannot be smoked in a public building, or within five metres of a doorway or window. Major landlords and condo boards have moved to ban smoking the substance in their buildings.

Pot can never be smoked in a motor vehicle, unless it is a parked motorhome, which is considered a temporary residence.

Impaired driving is a crime, as is illegal buying or selling of marijuana. Police also say public intoxication laws apply to inebriation from alcohol, cannabis and all narcotics.

Keith Ahlm owns Westside Weed in the South Flats, one of three cannabis retail locations in Medicine Hat that were open on Oct. 17. He and other owners reported line-ups from the start of business at 10 a.m. until 9 or 10 p.m. that night.

“It’s maybe 75 per cent of what it was on the opening week,” said Ahlm on Friday. “Up until this week, the real fight has been getting stock.”

That’s eased this week, he said, after the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission moved from a first-come-first-served ordering system — where available product would be snapped up immediately — to an allotment system.

The number of cannabis licences in Medicine Hat has also remained at three, though the number in the province has increased four-fold to 60.

About 14 other local applications remain in the queue with provincial regulators, and this month, city planners approved three more development permits, including one at North Pointe commercial mall on Division Ave. in Crescent Heights, a bay at the new Canalta development on Strachan Road.

Since Oct. 17, the seven locations in Lethbridge have received AGLC licensing, and the number of licensed locations in Calgary has grown from two on Oct. 17 to 20 this week.

The first retail outlet in Brooks, Spiritleaf, opened on Nov. 10, and that city is in the process on contemplating several more local applications.

The AGLC has received about 800 retailing applications in total for the entire province, including three for Redcliff.

Well I am not surprised, as most people that use weed are relaxed, and feel that there is no need for violence. our government is paranoid about the weed issues, I think that they have to go and do a retreat that uses weed and see for themselves that the negativity that they show about weed is false and overly paranoid.

So if you think that someone that smokes dope is a bad person or any other negative point, you are mistakenly wrong, dope smokes are not like drinkers we like to have our thoughts stimulated and we like deep conversations.

Drinking brings on negative emotional interactions when you push the limits of your tolerance, you’ve heard of people going on a “Drunken Rampage” but have you heard of a person doing a “High Rampage” no, cause with that frame of mind you have while under the influence does not let you , you do not want to be violent while using weed.

Now also take a look at those people that abstain from all intoxicating influences, those people are: judgemental, deceptive and willing to walk on people to get what the want.

At least that is what I have seen.

Now lets look at those religious people, and with them if you don’t do things their way than you are no good and evil (fanatic ones anyways) if you do not attend church you are bad. We start wars for the cause of religion, just because They want to force others to believe what the religious people believe.

So again which one sounds like it has the least negative impact on an individual or even our society.

Do not stand in judgement of something you do not understand, you can only stand against something when you truly know about it. So go out and have a few blast for a while and get a good year of experience with it and make your own choice based on experience rather than stupid assumptions.

Have a great day people.
