Thick ice clogged up against Finlay Bridge in Medicine Hat and caught the attention of provincial forecasters Tuesday, but the unusual sight is not cause for concern, say local officials.
Floes and thick chunks of snow and ice cover the river upstream from the historic bridge at noon on Tuesday, following cold temperatures through most of southern Alberta last week.
Downstream however, is a different story, with clear water accented by massive blocks after the demarcation line of Finlay Bridge on Sixth Avenue.
City director of emergency management Merrick Brown told the News that while it’s an interesting scene “there’s nothing to worry about.”
Brown also noted that provincial emergency officials made inquires early Tuesday about the level at the bridge, where provincial gauges are located.
“They wanted to know if there was a malfunction,” said Brown, noting. “They monitor it 24 hours a day and they are the professionals.”
