Something new popped up this weekend at Police Point Park — giving Hatters another place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The park unveiled its new Prairie View Lookout roughly one year after its previous one had to be torn down — three decades after it was first built.

“This new deck just got finished not too long ago and we’re really excited,” said park interpreter Marty Drut. “This is one of the best places in the park to just sit and take a break.

“It’s a great place to just enjoy the park with all of your senses and to get away.”

The spot was made possible by a grant from Co-op Community Spaces, and the park is very thankful, Drut says.

“We hope people will come and use this for a lot of things,” he said. “We’re also hoping to use it for a lot of things. We’re going to get lots of school groups out here and use this spot for different activities.”

Drut says the new lookout restores a popular place in the park.

“It got built when we first opened the park, and it got used a lot over the years,” he said. “It just got to the point where we had to take it down and get a new one.

“Because of the renovations going on right now it just sort of worked out with us getting the grant from Co-op.”

The spot features a 360-degree view of a fairly central part of the park, and it is on one of Police Point’s main trails.

“The reason this is located here is because it’s right in the middle of the prairie portion of the park,” said Drut. “You have a pretty much unobstructed view of any direction you look in.

“You can see cliffs, trees, prairie and just really every aspect of the park.”

People travelling to Police Point can ask the front desk for a map to locate the Prairie View Lookout.
