Local MP’s accusation against the RCMP for contempt of parliament to be heard today

An accusation levelled by the local MP that the RCMP were in contempt of parliament when they described effects of a gun bill will be before a house of commons committee today.

In June, Glen Motz argued that language used by the national police force in a bulletin to gun retailers made it seem as though the legislation had already been passed and adopted.

The member for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner petitioned House speaker Geoff Regan stating that challenged the supremacy of parliament. Regan found the complaint had some merit and it was forwarded to the House Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs.

That hearing will begin Tuesday in Ottawa.

A statement by Motz on Monday said, “This is the first time a committee will study the matter of government publications that prejudge the outcome of parliamentary decisions.”

Motz also stated he’d have no further statement before testifying at the committee.
