Amanda Hagel hasn’t been in Medicine Hat since she graduated from college in 1998.
She’ll finally be making her return to the Gas City on Nov. 10 when she will be performing some of her country songs at the College’s Eresman Theatre.
“I’m really looking forward to being back in Medicine Hat,” she said. “In the last four or five years I’ve decided to launch and pursue my own music and this is how its evolved.
“I’ll be on a concert tour and will be making one of my stops in Medicine Hat.”
Hagel grew up in Lancer, Sask. and quickly developed a love for all things music. She says she’s been experimenting with music for as long as she can remember.
“I’ve been playing guitar and singing ever since I was a kid,” she said. “I’m the youngest of nine kids and we’re very into music — I grew up with music and surrounded by music.
“It’s just evolved over time for me from me writing songs, being in a cover band to having my own stuff and playing shows.”
Hagel describes her sound as a country artist but she also performs many cover songs. She will be travelling with a number of band members to help put on the show.
“It’s country, but there’s some unique aspects to it,” she said. “I just put out a collection of cover songs that have some old rock songs and a couple pop songs — there’s variety for sure.”
Hagel studied physical education at the college from 1996-98 and now works as a personal trainer in Saskatoon. Hagel was named female athlete of the year both years she was a Rattler.
“After I graduated high school I attended the college for a couple years and had some good success playing volleyball for the Rattlers,” she said. “I always had that dream of doing music when I was doing college so it’s going to be a really cool moment for me.
“I had a lot of success during my time at the college and I’m just looking forward to it all.”
Hagel says she will be reconnecting with a lot of old friends while back in the Hat.
“Some of my old teammates from the volleyball team have reached out and we’re hoping to see some men’s team as well,” she said. “I guess it’s going to be a bit of a mini Rattler reunion.”
