Halloween is a great time of the year for kids everywhere — dentists, too.
The people at Southside Dental are hoping to help offer Hat children a way to avoid unwanted cavities while making a bit of cash as well.
“Every dental office gets nervous around Halloween — it’s a time when kids tend to overextend themselves,” said clinic manager Shelley Brooks. “What we’re offering is a trade for the kids, rather than just asking kids to get rid of or not eat some of the candy they get trick-or-treating.
“We’re offering a $1 buyback per pound of candy a kid brings in to our office, with a limit of five pounds per child.”
Brooks says this is something that is slowly getting more popular in North America.
“We’re seeing it a little more in the states and we thought we’d try it here,” she said. “After they get the money they can go out and buy something that may not result in a bunch of sugar on their teeth.
“There’s also an entry form they can fill out where they can win a movie trip for their whole class and they can just go as a class and be a hero for the day.”
Brooks says the office is trying to make it fun for kids to give up a portion of their candy.
“We know a lot of the time kids might not even finish everything — especially if it’s something they don’t like,” she said. “We don’t want to end the fun for the kids or anything like that — this is just our way of giving kids an option to get rid of their candy in a different way.”
Brooks says everyone is welcome to participate, not just clients, and that the clinic is looking at donating the bought-back candy to the food bank. Brooks asks that a parent is with any child looking to sell their candy.
