Medicine Hat News One week after retail cannabis sales were made legal in Canada, the number of provincial licences granted to sell regulated weed has doubled, but most going to large markets and no more in Medicine Hat. The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission granted 17 interim operating licences to applicants in the province ahead of the Oct. 17 legalization date. The number is now 34, according to a list provided Thursday. That includes an original three in Medicine Hat, which made the Gas City home to one of the highest per capita pot retail centres in the country. Calgary had only two on opening day and Edmonton six, plus five more in surrounding communities. Information from the AGLC now shows that single applications from Lethbridge and another in Lloydminster had been added. Three have been granted to Hinton-area applicants. Calgary now has 12, while Edmonton remains at six. Fort Saskatchewan has two, while Edmonton-area communities Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Devon, each have one. No application has been approved for Red Deer, though a shop in Stettler has received its licence. 11
