A new row of metered parking was put in place bordering the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, though city transportation planners say a further parking and traffic review in the area is still several years away.

On Tuesday, pay and display ticket dispensers went into service for on-street parking on the west side of Sixth Avenue SW, near the facility’s new entrance. That opened in April, 2017 as part of a multi-year, multi-phase redevelopment of the health facility. Over the past several years, motorists have increased traffic and competition for on-street spots has caused conflicts.

Planners with the city’s municipal works department have stated on recent several occasions that they plan to study the issues when construction is complete. A new plan would be developed after future traffic patterns are established, after major construction concludes some time in 2020.

The area includes not only the hospital, but seniors’ facilities, residences, medical offices and a school.

On-street spots on the east side of Sixth Avenue, adjacent to River Heights Elementary, remain free with a two-hour maximum restriction.
