The annual business awards held by the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce were held Friday evening at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede grounds.

The chamber holds the awards every year in support of Small Business Week — 2018 had a total of 76 nominations in 15 categories.

“It’s about celebrating businesses in our community and the surrounding area,” said chamber president Sarah MacKenzie. “There’s lots of awards tonight in a lot of different categories — with the biggest being the Award of Excellence.

“The Award of Excellence goes to a business that has been open for three years, they are a visionary, a leader in their field and highly involved in the community.”

The awards started 18 years ago with just two categories, one for small business of the year and one for large business of the year.

“We’re really excited about hosting this every year,” MacKenzie said. “This is one of our biggest events of the year and it’s great to recognize all the great businesses in and around Medicine Hat.

This year’s winners were chosen by various committees who reviewed and graded applications submitted by the businesses.

The big winner on the night was the Pritchard and Co. Law Firm, which won the Award of Excellence.

Kinetisense won the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and the Innovation Award.

The Southeast Alberta Shines Award went to the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede.
