After getting blanketed in snow overnight Monday, Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield area, but a local golf club is determined to stay open for the rest of the season.
Between 30 and 40 centimetres of snow fell over the region on Monday and Tuesday, with another 10 to 20 cm expected overnight, according to Environment Canada.
Wade Waters, head golf professional at Desert Blume Golf Course, says the club will endeavour to stay open until the end of the month as scheduled, particularly with a big golf tournament coming up.
The club is hosting the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Golf Classic from Oct. 14-19.
“We’re hoping to get good weather for that,” said Waters.
“With the snow right now, fortunately for us, it doesn’t look like it’s going to stick around.”
The club had to close down for Tuesday’s snow storm, “but as soon as the snow melts we’ll get back out there,” Waters said.
In 2017, it got too cold too soon, so the club had to shut down for October.
“We wanted our guys in our turf care department to properly put the course to bed, so we could have optimal playing conditions for the next year, which we did this year,” said Waters.
