This email purporting to be from Telus is a scam. Two ways to tell are it lacks the company's official logo and the email isn't from a Telus account.

Telus is warning customers to be skeptical of emails asking for personal information, while purporting to be from the company.

Telus Western Canada spokesman Doug Self says the company does its best to “employ robust, state-of-the-art technologies to help identify and filter out spam, malware and other threats so they never reach our customers.”

Since the company can’t prevent all imitators, Self provided some tips to identify fraudulent emails.

“It is unusual that a company would request you to provide personal information over e-mail, so double-check with the company,” he advises.

If the email or phone call requests personal information, such as an address or credit card number, Self suggests asking for the person’s name and information, and calling the company directly to verify they work for them.

Don’t follow any links in suspicious emails, he added. Just go to the company’s official website and sign into your account to see if there’s any notice asking for more information.

There are some dead giveaways that you’re dealing with an imposter.

The e-mail using an incorrect logo, as well as spelling and grammatical errors, is a clear giveaway that it’s not legitimate.

If you receive unsolicited correspondence from a vague or suspicious-sounding department, or an unidentified e-mail address, it’s likely a scam.

The same is true for web links — before clicking on it, you can hover your cursor over the link to see what the URL is. If it doesn’t say Telus in it, then it’s illegitimate.

Those who have received a suspicious e-mail posing as a particular company should contact the Canadian anti-fraud centre at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm, in addition to notifying the company.
