Medicine Hat News
As children head back to school the city is reminding drivers and pedestrians about safety.
The speed restriction in a playground zone is 30 km/h from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the year.
Do not park within five metres of a crosswalk or stop sign, within 1.5 metres of a driveway, or in a marked bus zone.
Do not double park and look for and adhere to parking restrictions signs.
Drivers must yield to pedestrians at crossing locations including those at intersections with a sidewalk on both sides, whether they are marked or not, says a City press release. Pedestrians have the right of way at crossing locations and motorists should wait until the pedestrian has completely cleared the intersection before proceeding.
When you are making a turn look in all directions for pedestrians and pedestrians should look in all directions for traffic before crossing. Do not assume a motorist will stop. It is a good idea to make eye contact with the driver to ensure the driver has seen you.
Pedestrians should cross at marked crossing locations and avoid jaywalking, they should stay alert and put away cellphones and other devices while crossing the street.
Cyclists must dismount from their bicycle to cross at a crosswalk. If a cyclist remains on the bike they are considered a motorist, says the City.
