A man arrested last week for impersonating a police officer in a preschool made a brief appearance Tuesday in Medicine Hat Provincial Court.
Michael Carolan, 38, who appeared in court via closed-circuit TV from Calgary Remand Centre, faces additional charges of uttering threats and breach of probation stemming from the same incident.
According to police, Carolan entered a preschool on Aug. 15 and became “agitated” during an exchange with staff members.
He then claimed to be a police officer, saying he has access to firearms.
Staff reportedly said they thought they saw a badge and a knife on his belt.
This wasn’t the first time Carolan has been arrested for an impersonating a cop.
Last year, he was convicted and sentenced to 90 days time served for
presenting himself as a police officer in Strathmore and offering assistance to a sheriff involved in a traffic stop.
In 2013, Carolan was shot three times by police — once in the face and twice in the back — after he refused to follow instructions to drop his gun.
Police had responded to a 911 call he made from his Ross Glen home.
Upon investigation, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team determined the shooting was justified.
Defence lawyer Robert Fischer is acting as agent for the accused, as Carolan doesn’t yet have counsel on record.
Fischer requested adjournment to Sept. 6 to obtain disclosure from the Crown, which was granted.
