Whether you wanted to fly high on the midway or cuddle little baby chicks, the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede was catering to it all on opening day.

Children were lining up to gently hold baby chicks and little ducklings at the Country in the City pavilion.

Sarah Lywood, 11, said she had come especially to hold the duckling that was “fuzzy” and a little restless in her hands.

“You want to put them in your pocket and take them home,” said Lywood, delighted with the whole experience.

The Strength Bar Challenge on the midway is a new game where you can win $100 cash. Bailee McNaughton looked really confident as she grabbed the bar and then the chair supporting her feet was taken away. You have to hang on for two minutes to qualify for the $100. Sadly, at the 30-second marked she lost her grip.

McNaughton says she’s a trained wrestler and has even to been to the nationals. The catch? The bar she had to grip is constantly revolving, adding to the challenge and making you readjust your grip. McNaughton intends to come back and give it another go.

The new craft corner in the Better Living hall is attracting children who want cooler temperatures for a while and a chance to get stuck into some crafts.
