An ex-news director and journalism instructor accused of a bank-robbing spree in Alberta and Saskatchewan pled guilty to four unrelated breaches of a protection order at Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Steve Vogelsang, 54, didn’t appear in court himself, but his lawyer entered the pleas before the judge ordered his client to pay $800 in fines.

Vogelsang is in jail in Regina.

The Crown said the protection order was violated when Vogelsang tried to contact his ex-girlfriend in Winnipeg last August.

The accused was arrested on robbery charges in fall 2017 after a string of six holdups in Medicine Hat, Regina and Saskatoon between July and October that year.

In his previous court appearance in Medicine Hat, Vogelsang elected trial by judge and jury for the robberies that occurred in that city.

His case is adjourned to Aug. 23, when he has a pre-trial conference scheduled.
