It was a 13-month sentence, time served, for a Winnipeger who attacked a man last summer with wood from a backyard fireplace.

Tyler Roulette has been in custody since the attack, and entered guilty pleas Tuesday to the charge of assault with a weapon.

According to the agreed statement of facts, the 22-year-old was in Medicine Hat for a wedding celebration and staying with family.

On July 16, Roulette went to the backyard and saw what he believed to be his mother being sexually assaulted by the victim. He grabbed a piece of wood — characterized by the defence counsel as a stick —from the backyard fireplace and attacked the man. The man was knocked unconscious, had a fractured jaw, broken nose, skull fracture and was in the ICU for several days.

The mother was intoxicated and doesn’t remember what happened.

The accused was also ordered to pay $1,100 in restitution for the lost wages the victim had due to being unable to work from the injuries sustained.
