Connaught School will be holding its 28th annual “Carnaval d’Hiver” (Winter Carnival) on Jan. 25 to celebrate the season and partake in some Quebec culture with fun, games and tasty food.
“It’s kind of a knock-off of the winter carnaval which happens in Quebec every year,” explains Grade 4 French immersion teacher Courtney Mason, who is helping to organize the Carnaval d’Hiver.
Students will spend the morning outside taking part in such activities as log racing, team giant ski racing and tug-of-war. The afternoon will be dedicated to art, games and crafts. Students will also be treated to a French toast and sausage lunch on the day of Carnaval.
Mason fully expects Bonhomme, the mascot of Carnaval, to make an appearance, and for she and her fellow teachers to look absolutely stylish in their plaid lumberjack outfits.
“It’s a big day for us, and everyone participates,” she says. “We have lots of activities, and we want the kids to have a lot of fun. We always have parent volunteers and, for sure, parents are invited to come out to the crowning of the king and queen of Carnaval on Tuesday afternoon (1-2 p.m.).”
