The agency investigating the fatal shooting by RCMP of a man in Gleichen last week says the man had a homemade shotgun-type weapon on him at the time. Just before 4 a.m. on Oct. 19 police approached a vehicle facing the wrong way on Haskayne Avenue in the southern Alberta town. The man, 26-years-old and from Morley, Alta., initially appeared to be sleeping or unconscious, reads the ASIRT report. When officers tried wake the man a confrontation occurred and the man was shot by an RCMP officer. The man died at the scene. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team continues to investigate. “Evidence has confirmed that at the time of the incident the man was in possession of a homemade weapon made to resemble shotgun-type firearm,” the statement reads. “Further investigation will be done to determine its functionality and what, if any, role it may have played in the incident.” 4
