Hundreds of people will begin a three-day 100km walk on Friday in the Kidney March to raise awareness and funds for life-saving research, support programs for patients and families as well as organ donation initiatives.

This is the eighth year of the march — the only event of its kind in the world — with more than 300 doctors, nurses, kidney patients, family and friends are hitting the road.

People from Medicine Hat participating too.

Kidney disease affects 10 per cent of Canadians. That means 3.6 million Canadians live with, and die from, this chronic illness. The Kidney Foundation of Canada partners with the kidney community to invest in lifesaving research and patient programs.

About 76 per cent of the 4,585 Canadians on the waiting list for an organ transplant are waiting for a kidney. KFOC builds awareness for organ donation and advocates for organ transplants in Canada.

The Kidney March opening ceremony takes place Friday morning at the Millarville racetrack. The closing ceremony on Sunday will be at Canada Olympic Park, corner of Canada Olympic Drive and Canada Olympic Road.
