For the better part of a decade and about one-third of her life Kira Isabella has been one of the top names in Canadian country music. With experience like that and youth on her side, the 25-year-old may just be getting started.
Isabella returned to the airwaves last year with “Little Girl” and “Danger Danger,” the first singles from the EP “Side A.” That EP, released in the fall, was followed earlier this month by “Side B.” Combined, the two EPs showcase Isabella’s new sound and attitude.
Maturity and confidence are terms she uses herself and has heard from others when talking about her growth.
“I think that comes with being a little more sure of myself and more sure of who I am and what I want to say,” she said. “My first album came out when I was like 17 and so I think a big part of it was just growing up and sort of finding myself.”
Part of what she found was that she has a powerful platform.
“With songs like ‘Quarterback’ and ‘Little Girl’ that I’ve had the opportunity to do over the years,” she said, “I’ve realized how many people I have the opportunity to reach with music like that.”
Isabella is also making it a point to reach young girls where they are — online. She rebranded her website to lifeaskira.com in an effort to open up more about her life and career. She also is active and popular with fans on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
“I love the interaction I have with people. It’s so instantaneous and easy. I just love it.”
She said she wants everyone to see the struggles, the day to day of what a Canadian artist like her goes through.
Isabella hopes to share a lot from the road on the Out On The Town Tour with Aaron Pritchett. The tour comes to Ralph’s Texas Bar & Steakhouse on Jan. 30, with David James also on the bill.
It’s been a while since Isabella was in the Medicine Hat area. She performed at Quonset Days in 2016 and Canada Day at Kin Coulee Park in 2015 and is looking forward to returning.
“I definitely love Medicine Hat, you guys were great. I know it was a great Canada Day,” she said. “I remember there was lots of beer flowing. It was a really good time, I love being out there.”
Isabella loves a good night out, too. It’s no surprise one of the 2013 Canadian Country Music Awards female artist of the year’s favourite out-on-the-town stories involves the CCMAs.
“The ol’ party is always a real really good time,” she said. “I definitely have a couple of memories of Aaron (Pritchett) and I being up on stage after a couple of drinks. There’s always a lot of artists there that are doing the same thing so probably one of those nights at the CCMAs.”
Tickets for the Jan. 30 show are available at Ralph’s.
