“A mother is someone who can take the place of all others, but whose place no one else can take.” Keep that in mind as Mother’s Day is just more than a week away. Do not forget! I’ve been subtlety dropping hints to my husband over the past couple of weeks, just as friendly reminders. Now, Mother’s Day isn’t necessarily about getting a gift. It’s about taking a day to appreciate everything your mom does for you. I’m going to give you a couple of ideas, both conventional and non-conventional, to make your mom feel extra special on Mother’s Day. 1) Get up extra early with the kids and make her coffee (or tea) and do breakfast in bed. It doesn’t have to be anything special. Toast, cereal, eggs, juice, whatever you’ve got on hand. Trust me, there is not a better feeling than being able to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee with no interruptions! 2) Get her car detailed. When you have kids, it is next to impossible to keep a clean ride. Every time I look at my dirty car, I sigh and say to myself “I’ll get to that later.” (I’ve been saying that for a year now.) 3) Buy her a Bluetooth speaker. This is actually what I got for Mother’s Day last year. I love being able to listen to my favourite tunes (Right now it’s the latest albums from Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin and Pop Evil) while I’m hanging out in the backyard. Plus, they’re portable! You can take them while out for a walk or a trip out to Echo Dale this summer. 4) Take the kids to the park or to the movies. What will she do while you’re gone? Well, she might read a book, have a nap, or watch her favourite TV show with no interruptions. Sometimes, a mom just wants some peace and quiet. 5) Send her on a spa day (or buy her a gift card for one and have the appointment booked). Every mom likes to be pampered whether it is getting a massage, a pedicure or a facial. There is nothing more relaxing! 6) Buy her concert/event tickets — there are so many amazing events coming to the Gas City in the next couple of months. Why not spoil her with tickets to Cirque Du Soleil’s Crystal, or how about Queen’s It’s a Kinda Magic show at the Esplanade? Don’t forget about Wingapalooza at the Canalta Centre! And, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts along with special guests The Guess Who will be rocking the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede this summer. Check out 1053rock.ca for full event listings. 7) Personalized “mom life” shirts, mugs or jewelry — they are all the rage right now. One of my favourite shirts I own says “I can’t adult today.” There are so many local shops here in Medicine Hat that personalize coffee mugs, water bottles, hoodies, T-shirts — whatever you’re looking for! Keep in mind there are some moms who just want to spend time with their family for Mother’s Day. This is your chance to plan a special outing; maybe pack a picnic and have lunch in the park! Whatever you plan to do, just remember the date — Sunday, May 13. Cassie Donnelly is the morning show co-host at 105.3 ROCK. You can reach her on twitter @cass_1053rock 12
